Tales from a Fractured Folly: 30th September 2017

I was supposed to be out today but although I got up and dressed ready, I really didn’t feel up to it. So I pottered about and then bumped into my new neighbour who was just taking her dog out for a walk, so I went up the hills with her. For most of the rest of the afternoon I snoozed on the sofa, then I went next door for some prosecco.

Tales from a Fractured Folly: 29th September 2017

I bought these lovely autumnal flowers to brighten up my hearth on the way home from a long day at work. I was on my own today and had the added excitement of a dodgy computer system that didn’t get fixed until 11.30. Bertie brought a mouse home again and woke me up early, so then I dozed off again, woke from a deep sleep and felt tired all day.

Tales from a Fractured Folly: 25th September 2017

Another 400 miles took us to the lovely little town of Bethune for our last stop before home. We are staying in the attic of a rather lovely house, very stylish. It’s only misfortune is being next door to a McCain factory and the consequent smell of chips, but it seems that they stop frying at night. So we wandered into the centre of town for our meal and had what was probably the best meal we have had all holiday, albeit we might have been in Belgium to look at, it is only 20 miles away. A lovely end to a lovely holiday.

Tales from a Fractured Folly: 24th September 2017

We left Italy in the rain this morning and started our journey home. The rain didn’t last long and most of the way were in sunshine like here at the foot of Mont Blanc which was covered in snow. The scenery was stunning and we drove through many tunnels, the longest was  under this chap.  We arrived at our stop tonight to be greeted by not only an Ola cat but her three kittens, who were the most amazing colours, one black and two varying shades of grey and ginger.

Tales from a Fractured Folly : 23rd September 2017

Our plan for today was to walk from this village, Corneglia to the next, Vernazza. The walk was ok although I wasn’t expecting to pay for it. But the weather was a bit iffy. Rain was forecast for this afternoon but it was definitely raining out at sea and it was just a question of how long it held off. But we got to our destination dry and had Bruschetta for lunch. Then we hopped on the train to Monterossa which was probably the prettiest of all the villages and certainly less  busy. But the rain was on its way and I had the foresight to buy an umbrella which was just as well. The spitting turned to drizzle and the drizzle turned to rain so we had an ice cream and headed home. We had been told about a lovely seaside village a little further up the coast called Bonassola so we called in there on our way back. It was quite lovely, a proper seaside town with a beach and best of all wonderfully quiet, but a bit of a pain to get to with lots of narrow windy roads. We sat for a while enjoying the peace and the setting sun. Then back to our hotel to get spruced up for dinner.

Tales from a Fractured Folly: 22nd September 2017

After a sumptuous breakfast including scrambled eggs, ham, salami, cheese, apricot croissants, orange juice, chocolate and coconut cake and orange cake,  we made our way to the station. The easiest way to get around is by train (or a lot of walking) so first stop Riomaggiore then Manarola, for a drink and light lunch.  Then on to Corniglia which was a killer with a fair walk from the station then 250 deep steps 😲. By the time we got to the top of there we were quite flaked out, so we decided to save the last two villages for tomorrow. Back at the hotel we sat on the terrace with tea and biscuits in the warm late afternoon sun, which was just the right amount of warm, not burning, just beautiful.

Tales from a Fractured Folly: 21st September 2017

It was time to start the second part of our holiday today and we were heading for Italy. I said goodbye to our little apartment with a definite plan to return in the Spring although I  felt a bit sad to go so soon. I thought of all the times I had stood on that terrace with Worth as we said our goodbyes, knowing that in reality it was all up in the air and we had no idea what the future held. We were off by 10 and arrived in our hotel by 3 and this is our new view for breakfast

And this is the beach at Levanto this evening
